Georgia Ragia

MSc, PhD, Molecular Biologist & Geneticist
Postdoctoral Researcher
Scholarship holder, Department of Medicine, DUTH

Dr. Ragia has a bachelor of science degree in Molecular Biology and Genetics (2004) and in 2010 she obtained a PhD from the Medical School of Democritus University of Thrace after completing her PhD thesis Study of clinically important genetic polymorphisms of the human genome associated with cardiovascular disease”. Since then, she is a postdoctoral researcher in the Laboratory of Pharmacology of Democritus University of Thrace and collaborates with her mentor and PhD thesis supervisor Professor Vangelis Manolopoulos. From 2012 to 2019 she was Scientific Director of the company DNALEX S.A., a leader Greek privately held corporation providing pharmacogenomic services. She has worked for the European Trial “Genotype-guided dosing of coumarin derivatives: The European Pharmacogenetics of AntiCoagulant Therapy (EU-PACT)” and for the clinical trial “Personalized Medicine of Alcohol Dependence (PERMEDAL)”.

Currently, Dr. Ragia is a Senior Research Scientist in Individualised Medicine & Pharmacological Research Solutions Center (IMPReS) (MIS 5047189) which is implemented under the Action “Support for Regional Excellence”, funded by the Operational Program “Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship and Innovation” (NSRF 2014–2020). Her main research project focuses on the pharmacoepigenomics of direct oral anticoagulants in atrial fibrillation patients.

She has authored 47 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals (h-index: 19, mean impact factor: 4,26, total citations: 1390) and 1 textbook chapter. An extended list of her publications can be found at https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?term=Ragia+G.&sort=date (PubMed) and https://www.scopus.com/authid/detail.uri?authorId=13808189200 (Scopus).

She was responsible for the teaching of the elective courses “Pharmacogenomics and Personalized Pharmacotherapy” (2015-2021) and “Clinical and Applied Genetics” (2018-2021) in Medical School, Democritus University of Thrace, Greece. Currently, she continues to participate in the teaching of the elective course “Pharmacogenomics and Personalized Pharmacotherapy” in Medical School, DUTH. She is invited speaker at Graduate Programmes “Clinical Pharmacology-Therapeutics” (since 2011) and “Biomedical Sciences: Disease Diagnosis and Therapy” (since 2020) teaching the lecture title series “Clinical applications of pharmacogenomics”.

Her research interests include clinical applications of pharmacogenomics in drugs used for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, anticoagulant therapy, psychiatric disease and alcohol dependence. In addition, she is interested in genomics and epigenomics of complex diseases such as atherosclerosis and diabetes.

She serves as a reviewer for the peer-reviewed scientific journals Drug Metabolism and Personalized Therapy, Pharmacogenomics, Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice and British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology.

She is a member of the European Society of Pharmacogenomics and Personalised Therapy (ESPT) and the Greek Society of Pharmacology (GSP).
